Jezebel: The In-Workings of a Trojan Horse
One of the greatest movies of the early 2000s - Troy. In the movie, starring Brad Pitt, the fortified city of Troy receives a “gift” from the Greeks. A giant wooden horse that as the tale goes was a Trojan Horse. The “gift” was said to be an offering unto either the Greek “god” Poseidon or the goddess Athena. Scholars debate between the two. However, hidden within the giant wooden horse were Greek soldiers. Greek soldiers armed and ready to burn Troy to the ground. History tells the tale that after all had gone to bed and the “gift” had been wheeled into the city, the soldiers crawled out of the Trojan horse and burned Troy to a crisp. Spiritually speaking, this is exactly the tale of the Jezebel Spirit.
Gift OR Trap?
If Troy hadn’t been burned to the ground according to this mythological tale, they would have said it was a trap!
In Charismatic Christian circles, the term Jezebel Spirit has been frequently addressed — at times incorrectly. The name Jezebel means “without honor”. Some have misunderstood the Jezebel Spirit as being a “strong unruly woman”, but it’s far more than this; particularly as it manifests in just as many men as it does women. The Jezebel spirit is a demonic spirit that overtakes an individuals soulish personality, warping their mind, will, and emotions. Masquerading as all things wonderful, this spirit uses it’s host to gain trust through deception, manipulation, and control. Henceforth, this narcissistic spirit will proceed to divide and conquer, cause confusion and chaos, lead an uprising against true God ordained spiritual authority, and guide people into the ways of rebellion against God and all that is called Holy. Behind all spirits of witchcraft, Jezebel can be found.
The story begins with Ahab, King of Israel, marrying Queen Jezebel, the High Priestess of Baal. Jezebel was a covenant breaking sorceress who claimed to be a prophetess who was known for turning Israel away from God and to serving occultic idols on a greater level than prior to she and King Ahab’s reign.
“29 Ahab son of Omri began to rule over Israel in the thirty-eighth year of King Asa’s reign in Judah. He reigned in Samaria twenty-two years. 30 But Ahab son of Omri did what was evil in the Lord’s sight, even more than any of the kings before him. 31 And as though it were not enough to follow the sinful example of Jeroboam, he married Jezebel, the daughter of King Ethbaal of the Sidonians, and he began to bow down in worship of Baal. 32 First Ahab built a temple and an altar for Baal in Samaria. 33 Then he set up an Asherah pole. He did more to provoke the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, than any of the other kings of Israel before him.” 1 Kings 16:29-33 NLT
As evil as the Jezebel Spirit truly is, biblically, Jezebel Spirits can only rule and reign in their wickedness with the empowerment of an Ahab Spirit. Contrary to the all too common narrative, the Jezebel spirit requires a passive primary leader who enables and empowers it’s wickedness. It can not function on it’s own. What we learn from scripture is that Ahab did more evil than all the kings of Israel. It was Ahab’s wicked heart that attracted him to the demon worshiping sorceress in the first place! Ahab’s throne wasn’t usurped, he ENTHROWNED Queen Jezebel by entering into covenant with her and thus with her idolatrous practices!
Back to the Trojan horse narrative. It’s interesting how someone can be seen as an absolute gift, but they end up being the very thing that brings you to ruin. Just as Troy embraced the Trojan horse as a gift under FALSE PRETENSES, Jezebel finds its way into your home, your ministry, and your business by putting on airs. The host of the Jezebel spirit will always appear to be the most helpful, gifted, and innocent person. They will know all the right things to say to earn your favor and will generally have a skill set that makes them appear to be the perfect fit. But the moment you tell them “no” you will see a different side come forth that they calculatedly covered up until just the right moment. By the time this spirit reveals its true colors, its host has already infiltrated and “cozied-up” with the other members of the family, church, or business in such a way that no one will believe that they are the "Trojan”.
Psychologically, the Jezebel spirit works in tandem with and is defined as a narcissistic personality. Just a few of the key traits associated with the Narcissistic Personality Disorder are a grandiose sense of self-importance, a constant need for admiration, a lack of empathy, a sense of entitlement, relational triangulation, arrogance, manipulation and control, and deep envy. While there are many notable traits of NPD, these will be amongst some of the most prominent. While NPD is a specific disorder, everyone who is possessed by a Jezebel Spirit doesn’t have NPD. However, all those possessed by a spirit of Jezebel will have these traits, some traits being stronger and more prominent than others.
Should we hate those possessed by the Spirit of Jezebel?
No. While this spirit will seek to goad you into retaliation and emotional reactivity, allowing it to breed hatred in your heart will only further empower it. Your own emotional reactivity will turn the jezebelic abuser into a “victim” and you’ll be spun as the bad guy. Those possessed by the spirit of Jezebel usually have come to such a state as a result of deep rooted trauma. Trauma unaddressed and unhealed is the breeding ground of demons. Where the soul has been traumatized, the Jezebel spirit deceives the individual into seeing it as their savior. It causes them to feel powerful where they felt the most power was taken from them through abuse. So no, we shouldn’t hate these individuals, but we should be extremely guarded and aware of their true condition and state — regardless of the performance concealing the truth.
Can someone possessed/oppressed by a Jezebel spirit be delivered?
Absolutely. But they have to want it! As important as compassion is, no one is responsible for our inner healing besides us! This is not to minimize the role that parents are to play in their children’s inner healing journey after abuse as emotionally immature children aren’t prepared for abuse of any kind. Besides this, every grown adult is responsible for both their own inner healing and their own choices! What I’ve found regarding those afflicted with the Jezebel spirit, is that inner healing needs to happen simultaneously with deliverance ministry. Not one or the other! Those gaping wounds of trauma have to be revisited and properly healed or the demons you are able to successfully cast out WILL COME BACK WORSE!
“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.” Matthew 12:43-45 AMP
You see, it’s not enough to simply cast out a demon. We see from scripture, that if you cast out a demon, unclean spirits, and you don’t “restock the house” with the right things, i.e. mind renewal to truth and the healing of the soul, 7 demons WORSE than the ones you’ve expelled from the individual will come and bring further torment to the individuals soul! Sadly, in many Christian ministries, people have ended up further demonized because they weren’t taught how to MAINTAIN their deliverance. Their souls were not healed and their minds were not restored and renewed and as a result, the demons that were cast out of them were welcomed back - whether intentionally through acts of willful sin or unintentionally as a result of ignorance. A broken soul will continually gravitate towards the very things that give demons access in the first place.

Finally, I’d like to recommend that if you’re dealing with some “Trojan Horses” or those you perceive to have a Jezebel Spirit, that you read the book a mentor recommended to me a decade ago, “Unmasking The Jezebel Spirit” by John Paul Jackson. You’ll learn about navigating the Jezebel Spirit as well as the results of those who tolerated a Jezebel spirit. Such sad endings!
